Granma's 9 Day Pickles

This is a family recipe from Elizabeth Atterberry. 


Granma's 9 Day Pickles


20 medium cucumbers                                

Boiling water

In a large dutch oven or pot, place the cucumbers. Cover with boiling water and let stand overnight. Drain and repeat this procedure for 3 days. On the 5th day, drain and slice the cucumbers into 1/2 inch pieces and place back into the dutch oven or pot.


Syrup        8 cups sugar

                 2 teaspoons mixed pickling spices

                 5 teaspoons of salt

                 4 cups of distilled white vinegar


Combine the syrup ingredients and bring to boiling point. Pour the mixture over the cucumbers. Let it stand for 2 days. On the third day bring the cucumbers and syrup to a boil and seal in hot jars.
